Joel Gordon-Made in America

This is a teaser trailer for a documentary about Joel Gordon.... a one of a kind American original.
The story of one man's triumph and perseverance that takes him from a small town to his dreams.
Always keeping with his philosophy,

"...take a hobby and learn how to eat on it.... and then you'll be happy..."

Sage words indeed.

civilized men

"Before our white brothers arrived to make us civilized men, we didn't have any kind of prison. Because of this, we had no delinquents. Without a prison, there can be no delinquents. We had no locks nor keys and therefore among us there were no thieves. When someone was so poor that he couldn't afford a horse, a tent or a blanket, he would, in that case, receive it all as a gift.

We were too uncivilized to give great importance to private property. We didn't know any kind of money and consequently, the value of a human being was not determined by his wealth. We had no written laws laid down, no lawyers, no politicians, therefore we were not able to cheat and swindle one another.

We were really in bad shape before the white men arrived and I don't know how to explain how we were able to manage without these fundamental things that (so they tell us) are so necessary for a civilized society."

If You Dont Like The Effects Dont Produce The Cause

by Funkadelic

If you don't like the effect
Don't produce the cause

You say you don't like where you're at (yeah)
You can make a change
If you accept the blame
Stay in control of your reactions yes
Will determine the effect
Of any situation
You have the power to negate
Any of supposing feeling
That prohibits you to think
A situation is just that
It has no special power
To do you harm
It's your reactions that count
If you don't like the effect
Don't produce the cause

You say you don't like what your country's about (yeah)
Ain't you deep
In your semi-first class seat
You picket this and protest that
And eat yourself fat
Ain't you deep
In your semi-first class seat
If you don't like the effect
Don't produce the cause

You say you don't like what your country's about (yeah)
Ain't you deep
In your semi-first class seat
You picket this and protest that
And eat yourself fat
Ain't you deep
In your semi-first class seat
La la la la-la la la la la

a fine quote

"Every day we slaughter our finest impulses. That is why we get a heart-ache when we read those lines written by the hand of a master and recognize them as our own, as the tender shoots which we stifled because we lacked the faith to believe in our own powers, our own criterion of truth and beauty. Every man, when he gets quiet, when he becomes desperately honest with himself, is capable of uttering profound truths. We all derive from the same source. There is no mystery about the origin of things. We are all part of creation, all kings, all poets, all musicians; we have only to open up, to discover what is already there."

Someday...

Someday
I will
get my head together
someday
I will
put my demons to rest
someday
I will
find my wings and take flight
someday
I will
find some peace and happiness
someday
I will... I swear I will...

"Cabin Fever" in review

I picked this up the other day. Let me tell you I'm a huge fan to start with, and I have played "Before the Frost...Until the Freeze" their 2009 release repetitively since I purchased it. The concept behind the album was to write the songs, rehearse songs, and then play songs live in front of a crowd while recording them. I like this idea, and the DVD is a video of that process. I like that too. The whole thing was recorded over five nights in front of an intimate studio audience at Levon Helm Studios .
The show kicks off with Chris setting the stage for what's to come. They start off with "Aimless peacock", then into a classic crowes sounding  "Good morning captain", which is gunning for my favorite cut. Up next an intimate version of "Shady grove" with the just Chris and Rich playing together acoustically by themselves. Some old Velvet Underground pops up in the form of "Oh Sweet Nuthin'" with Rich Robinson taking the vocal duties. A very cool change of pace with Rich singing. Now we're in for some more porch music with "Garden Gate" and "Roll Old Jeremiah". Another standout song "Appaloosa" blows in like a warm summer breeze, followed by a DVD exclusive "Little Lizzie Mae". They run through "What is home?", and turn the corner into the rocker "Been A Long Time (Waiting On Love)" another favorite of mine. Luther tears it up on that one. They wrap it up with "Shine along" , which has great "my rider done left me" lyrics and vibe. It has two bonus cuts of  "Shady Grove" and "Dolphins", both of which are great.
The Crowes current line up features Chris and Rich Robinson singing and guitar playing. Steve Gorman pounding the skins with Sven Pipien holding the low end down. They got Adam MacDougall twinkling the keys, and who could forget Luther Dickinson holding down lead guitar chores, very well I might add. Joe Magistro added additional percussion, and the amazing Larry Cambell plays banjo, fiddle, pedal steel, etc...
